GDPR is all around me

GDPR brings a song to mind

“I feel it in my fingers,
I feel it in my toes,
GDPR is all around me
and so the feeling grows”

It sure grows. However, it is not that “Christmas-y” feeling, that would fill you up with love and happy tears.

Don’t get me wrong, there are tears…, but they are far from happy.

This time I can’t provide you with any public speaking related stuff, because all I am doing now is getting my site GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) compliant.

I knew that this EU regulation was coming into effect from May 25th, 2018. I also knew that I didn’t want to hire an attorney for the price of a used car (okay, pretty used…) that gave me a heads up on how to get my site compliant.

But still:

Why me?

I mean all I do is collect your emails in return for you downloading my freebies, does GDPR cover me at all?

It turns out that even a simple small online business like mine needs to meet certain aspects or a €20 million check could easily land in my post box. That’s right: That is 20 000 000 in Euros. I’m not even sure whether it would fit into my post box. I might have to get a GDPR fine compliant post box…

So right now I am working on creating ways to get your consent on staying on my newsletter.

Yet, I’m a bit confused

I mean, didn’t you know that once I ask for your email for my freebie, I’ll put you on my email list to keep you updated?

I can imagine that there might be people who didn’t know this. But I also think these are the same people who still remember the shock of reading about Franz Ferdinand’s death in the newspaper. If you’ve been around during the last few years this shouldn’t be a surprise for you.

Anyhow, please re-subscribe

Still, if you are a member of my email list and would like to get emails furthermore, please resubscribe through any of my freebies. (I.e: Free speech preparation checklist)

When clicking on the email you get, you will be directed to a page that is to proactively express your consent for wanting to get on my email list.

Why provide emails?

Here is the reason why:

I.e.: I know that I get email, storage, calendar, etc. services for “free” because in exchange I give my data. With this data, companies such as Google, Facebook or Microsoft will make money. Money that they will spend on developing new and better services. For which services we will pay for with our data.

If we prevent companies to gather data, it will result in one of two effects:

  1. quality of services will start to drop and sooner than later we will end up with useless services,
  2. or crafty providers will figure out how to get our data regardless of the regulations.

I spend hours of creating quality content for you in order to get a big enough list to increase the chance of getting clients that would actually pay for my online services. This is how it works today.

So be conscious, but at the same time keep an open mind.

So how do you become GDPR compliant?

Anyhow, if you, as an online entrepreneur, are in the same shoe as I and don’t want to spend a fortune on attorneys, then start with Amy Porterfield’s podcast on the topic and then head over to Bobby Klinck’s website and go through his webinars… or you might as well read the 250-page legal paper.

Now I let GDPR to swallow me back in.

Give me a thumbs up if you go through the same hassle.

Oh, I have constant headache because of this stuff… And my list has only 5 percent EU members so I can imagine that you – based there – have a hard time… Good luck! I’m listening to Amy’s podcast and trying to figure out how to do this in ActiveCampaign…

Interestingly, It seems less of a hassle, based on Bobby Klinck’s advice. He says that I don’t need an EU representative, for instance.
So Good luck right back at you, Andi. Hope to be able to finally sort things out.
