The Real Thoughts Of An Investor

Last week I held a workshop, where after pitching their ideas, startuppers got feedback from investors on what to improve.

The real thoughts of an investor

During the break, one of the investors came up to me to share his thoughts.

“Atis, want to know what I have written in my notes?”

He flipped over the top page of his notes and revealed what was written next to the names of the pitchers:

  • Go to speech therapist!
  • Articulate more!
  • Learn how to give a public speech!

All day long these investors were seeking ways to help. However, after showing me this list, he said:

“This is what they should do, but I’m not going to be the one to tell them. I would come off as too rough.”

Don’t wait to be turned down

To make sure, you don’t get turned down just because nobody warned you, here is my warning:

If you don’t learn how to share your ideas in a clear and interesting way, then don’t expect to be called back after a presentation.

This applies to public speeches, job interviews, or even asking someone out.

  • If you just mumble your speech, no one will care to make an effort to understand.
  • If you swing back-and-forth while speaking, it will look like you feel uncomfortable talking about your idea.
  • If you are too silent, then even someone pouring water from a bottle into a glass might quench your most interesting thoughts.
  • If you dress like going to a party, no one will think of you as someone able to achieve something.
  • If you look depressed as hell, no one will want to work with you.

I know, these are not the sole values of someone. Not something, that should determine whether people turn you down or not. But these can still ruin your chances.

So what can you do?

The good news is: these issues can be eliminated. For god’s sake, make some effort! Put work into it: PRACTICE! Record yourself! Ask a friend!

  • Articulate!
  • Stand still!
  • Speak up!
  • Put on decent clothes!
  • Push your chest out!

It will not only do good for your performance but will also help with your reception in everyday interactions as well.

If you feel no one gives a valuable feedback, then write me a message.

So that the next time you meet an investor, only five words will get in his notes: “How much do you need?”
